Every major AI lab is now shipping memory imports off the back of the #quitGPT movement. Google is testing ChatGPT conversation imports. Mistral is asking users for memories from other LLMs.

But the AI memory you can export isn't the memory that matters.

A user who's had three years of conversations with an AI (me!) has built up a relationship with that agent: a shared conversation context that the LLM retrieves from every time it responds. That's what makes it feel like it gets you.

That's not what gets exported.

A lossy compression of a relationship.

For autonomous agents like OpenClaw that act on your behalf without constant hand-holding, this isn't a frustration, it's a fundamental blocker.

The bar for AI memory portability needs to be set at what agents actually need to act with agency, not what's easily compressed.
