I've been building an AI Data Product Manager for a customer, and it's pretty bad at coming up with original product ideas.

  • It has access to PostHog and Langfuse traces.
  • While it's good at spotting low-hanging fruit (like opportunities for re-engagement campaigns), it's a long way from what I'd expect from an exceptional data PM.
An AI-generated product recommendation card: "Send the first re-engagement campaign", tagged large impact and low effort, with why, evidence and expected impact sections
A typical recommendation from the AI data PM: sensible, well evidenced, and not something a great PM would need an AI to find

The best data scientists and product managers I've worked with have a deep curiosity about their products. They care about their products, understand their metrics deeply, and keep digging to come up with some really creative initiatives.

I haven't seen AI PMs do this yet.

For now, even self-building products need great human PMs.
